A message from Dr. Brad: Why I started LiveLight

Welcome to LiveLightmd.com. I'm glad you stopped by.

I was an emergency room physician and then an internist for 12 years when a very overweight patient forced me to expand the boundaries of my medical training.

I trained in a system that waited for an individual’s health to decline, and then offered high-risk treatments like surgery as solutions. I realized that we needed a proactive, personalized healthcare that gives individuals preventive tools to optimize their health. We can and should take a holistic approach to weight loss and health. When we combine personalized education about nutrition and movement with an understanding of how the mind works, people are empowered to re-evaluate what it means to be healthy and take control of their own health.

With this vision in mind, I collaborated with other Stanford and Harvard physicians to start LiveLight. On the surface, we were addressing weight loss and health, but we were also building a tool to empower patients to live their values. People often come to LiveLight believing that there are other more successful people around them who achieve goals because they have some innate quality, like willpower, that they themselves lack. They judge themselves for being deficient in that quality. We teach LiveLight members that people who are more successful at reaching goals are not intrinsically different; they are instead using a different set of tools. Tools that are available to everyone.

I was especially drawn to treating excess body weight because traditional medicine has failed to find an effective long-term approach. Two thirds of adults in the United States are overweight, and 95% of them are not actively engaged in reducing their weight because they don’t believe anything will help them. We designed LiveLight to give people a simple, durable approach to a healthy body weight. We’ve moved beyond the empty repetition of information that people already know, such as “eat less and exercise more,” to creating effective medical and personal tools that change long-term health. We believe that people are happiest when they are actively engaged in the process of growing themselves. Our mission has been to enable this process, and provide tools that quickly reward people for their efforts.
